The Hoop & The Harm: Rings & Things

I’m not entirely sure how they did it, but the Dallas Mavericks are on top of the basketball world at the moment after stunning the mighty Miami Heat in six games this week.

It was sweet redemption for Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, who were both there when the Heat came from behind to beat the Mavs in 2006, and it was a long time coming for Jason Kidd who finally got his hands on the trophy after 17 seasons in the league. So, now they all have more rings than LeBron James right?

Well…they now have one more championship than he does, but not necessarily more rings. That is, if Mavs owner Mark Cuban gets his way!

Cuban said after the win on the weekend that he might not get rings for his players because they are so old school, and that he felt like it was time to take things to another level, whatever that means. That’s not sitting well with the players though, and ESPN says they’ve all had a chance to try and talk Cuban out of whatever crazy thing he’s thinking of doing!

Here’s what Nowitzki had to say:

“We got to talk to him about that. I don’t think the last word has been spoken yet. You know he always wants to do something different, wants to do something bigger, but I mean, the ring is just so classic. I think I would vote for a ring. I mean, I’m a man. I don’t know how I’d feel about a bracelet.”

Say Mark Cuban doesn’t get his players championship rings – what kind of “next level” thing could he get them instead? Tauntr has a few ideas, including the always-classy Championship Belt!

It’s kind of funny – in 2006, a leaked Dallas parade route seemed to turn the tide in a series that the Heat eventually won. Fast forward to this year and a team of superstars, who held a championship style parade before the season even started, fell apart when it mattered most.

Speaking of that collapse, the one guy who is hearing about it more than anyone this week is LeBron James – have you heard some of the jokes that are floating around about the way he played in the big series? Here’s one:

If you ask LeBron for a dollar, why does he only give you 75 cents? Because he has no fourth quarter!

This story right here takes the cake though:

The Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League say they’ll be handing out replicas of James’ championship ring to all of their fans on Thursday night! The Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs will be handing out these replica “rings” on the same night they plan to honor the six NBA titles of the Chicago Bulls.

The team says its also seeking approval from the league to skip the fourth inning, because if LeBron didn’t have to show up, why should they?

What’s the best LeBron James joke you’ve heard this week?
