Sure, it’s too early in the season to get a good read on how your team is going to do and who is going to run away with all of the individual awards, but at least we can now sit back and watch the multitude of early season dangles!
Throughout the year, I’ll be counting down the top five goals each week ending each Sunday. I’ll also be trying to track down the “What the Puck” moment of each and every week of the NHL season, which you’ll find after the number one gino.
Here we go!
5. Jiri Hudler
Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler gets us started this week, taking a nice feed from Pavel Datsyuk before making a deposit into the bank of shelf with a sick backhander! If I had to caption Craig Anderson’s post-goal response, it would probably read: C’mon Man!
4. Eric Staal
The Carolina Hurricanes come together to bring us the number four goal of the week – playing some nice perimeter hockey before Jussi Jokinen completes the tic-tac-toe with a pass to Eric Staal, who nails it home. It’s so quiet at the Verizon Center that you can actually hear Staal doing his best Ric Flair imitation after the goal.
3. Brad Richards
NY Rangers center Brad Richards has been having a hell of a time putting together some of the Ikea furniture at his new place in the Big Apple, so while he was in Sweden, he decided to show them a thing or two about shelf!
2. Vinny Lecavalier
Vinny Lecavalier looked more Tampa Bay Ray than Tampa Bay Lightning this past week, batting home a big Cam Ward rebound. He looked like Evan Longoria belting one down the third base line out there!
1. Claude Giroux
The number one goal this week goes to Philly dangler Claude Giroux! He took a pass from Jaromir Jagr, kicked it up to his stick and skated through a sea of Bruins shirts before putting the moves on Tim Thomas for a filthy snipe!
What the Puck?
This is where you’ll find the strangest moment of the week that was in the NHL – this week, we’re left to wonder what Carolina’s Jussi Jokinen was thinking last Friday.
Jokinen was so upset that Justin Faulk got called for interference that he smacked the puck in the direction of the ref as play was whistled down. It’s not like he ripped it at him, but it was hard enough that we all knew what he was thinking…Long story short, he got dinged with a minor penalty himself and Vinny Lecavalier made him pay with that beauty goal you saw at number two on the list!
