WHL refs Mo-up for Movember

If you're anything like me - and I'm pretty sure you all are - you've dished out an enormous amount of abuse towards referees and linesmen over the years.

For our entire hockey watching or hockey playing lives, we've all basically disagreed with every single call these lads have made, unless of course it was for our team. Sure, it's a bit unfair, but if they just made the right call all the time, we wouldn't have this problem. Am I right?!

One great call that officials have made recently is teaming up to raise cash for men's health and prostate cancer awareness, and they're now giving you a chance to "make amends" for all of those earlier disagreements. Now into their third year, the MOfficials are once again taking part in the Canadian Hockey League's Movember effort.

"The MOfficials are a group of WHL officials, officials from around the CHL and friends who raise money every year for the Movember campaign," says MOfficial Kyle Kowalski. "What we do is we grow our best moustaches and try to raise awareness for men's health."

After raising just shy of $15,000 in 2010, the MOfficials took home the coveted CHL moustache trophy last year by getting over $33,000 worth of donations together. In order to defend that title though, Kowalski says they've upped their goal.

"Our goal this year is $50,000, and that represents $1 for every man that was diagnosed with prostate cancer [in Canada] last year," says Kowalski. "It's a beautiful moustache trophy that is awarded out to the top CHL team. We're a group of officials that came together to raise money here and we'd like to win that trophy back again."

If you'd like to "make amends with the refs we all yell at," head to the MOfficials website and follow the links to donate.

Trolling Replacement Refs

Don’t you hate it when you have a problem that’s causing you some serious grief and someone tries to make you feel better by letting you know that things could be worse?

So do I, but if you’re a hockey fan looking for some “lockout sympathy” from a football fan, that person may be correct this ONE time.

You see, while the NHL has locked out its players, the NFL has done something that might even be a bit more damaging to the game: they’ve locked out the referees. If you haven’t watched any football yet this season, you’re probably wondering what the big deal is…but if you have, you know exactly what I’m talking about: the replacement refs are brutal & things are getting very interesting!

If you missed Monday Night Football this week, the Seattle Seahawks beat the Green Bay Packers on a last-second Hail Mary into the end zone that appeared to be intercepted, confusing the two refs on the scene, who both called the play differently. What followed was a total mess, but it was also the most fun I’ve EVER had on Twitter!

Between the funny tweets from fans and the NSFW tweets from guys like TJ Lang, Jermichael Finley and Josh Sitton of the Packers, I actually started to enjoy the replacement refs...then I started to realize that maybe they’ve been around this whole time and we just didn’t notice them.

I did a bit of digging and as it turns out, they’ve actually been a part of some of the biggest controversies and conspiracies in recent US history, like the Muhammad Ali “phantom punch” in 1965:

Photobucket

A few years later, the replacement refs turned up again to dispute the lunar landing, flagging Neil Armstrong for zero gravity pass interference, a call that was later overturned by an intergalactic review panel:

Photobucket

Following that debacle, the replacement refs decided to lay low for a while, but surfaced again in May of 2003 on the USS Abraham Lincoln:

Photobucket

Now that they’re in the spotlight though, the replacement refs can’t seem to get enough face time – here they are trying to take away Blue Jays ace Ricky Romero’s first win since June!

Photobucket

The crazy thing is, you might know a replacement ref and not even realize it! It turns out my water bottle has been contacted about filling in, and I caught it studying the NFL website & watching game tapes just the other day:

Photobucket

If you’re not quite convinced that I had an absolute blast with this story on Monday, here’s an example of some of the fun I had on the air at the expense of the replacement refs:

I can’t wait for week four to start on Thursday!

15 Minutes of Fame

Happy Tuesday!

Oilers arena talks get testy

When it comes to hockey, fans in Edmonton have more than just the lockout to worry about these days.

If and when a new CBA is reached and the NHL returns to rinks across North America, it's a given that the Edmonton Oilers will once again hit the ice at Rexall Place. Beyond that though, the future of the team in the City of Champions is at least a bit up in the air.

It's overly premature to say that the Oilers are on the way out, but without an agreement on a new downtown arena, that might just be the case.

Things have been getting a bit testy between the city and the Katz Group lately, starting with a request from the group last week for more public money for the proposed development. That request was turned down, information about it was leaked to the media and this week, the rarely heard from owner of the Oilers decided to speak up.

"The information was part of a confidential, ongoing negotiation and a confidential briefing to council," Katz told 630 CHED's Oilers Now. "It didn't come from us, so you have to ask really, who leaked it and what they were trying to do by facilitating such a leak."

The good news is that both sides are still committed to getting a deal done and both say they're hopeful that an agreement can eventually be reached. The bad news is that without a new downtown rink, the Katz Group says the Oilers likely won't be able to stay in Edmonton. Katz said on Tuesday that public money is key to this project and pointed to recent history to try and prove his point.

"There's only one NHL arena in Canada built entirely with private funding that hasn't been a disaster, and that's the ACC in Toronto, where they have Canada's largest media market and both an NHL and an NBA team," explained Katz. "Everyone else has lost their shirts, their buildings and their teams, so this has to be a private-public partnership."

"What matters here is whether we can come to an agreement on a partnership deal that will enable Edmonton to sustain the Oilers for the long term, secure the arena, and deliver all these great things for the benefit of all Edmontonians."

Edmonton mayor Stephen Mandel is denying that any leaked information came from his side and is calling on the Katz Group to come to City Hall and release its full position to the public. In a statement released on Tuesday, Mandel said the city is at a "significant crossroads" and having the Katz Group clarify its position is the only way to move things along.

While it might sound like things are heading in the wrong direction here, there are definitely some things to keep in mind: first of all, both sides will absolutely benefit from this project going ahead and it genuinely sounds like they both want to make it happen. Secondly, this whole thing could easily be chalked up as nothing more than a normal part of the negotiation process, with both sides doing whatever they can to get the best deal.

Now, I'm no genius (not even close, actually), but if you want to know what I think will happen going forward, here it is:

The city will meet with the Katz Group soon, the two sides will go back and forth a bit before getting on the same page with a few concessions made on each end, and then a rink that is slightly more expensive than the agreed upon $450-million price tag will be built. I think both sides know that they will live to regret it if they let this slip away, and that will be one of the motivating factors for getting a deal done in the near future.

Then again, what do I know?

What do you think: Will the Oilers get a new rink, or will they be forced to skip town when the lease at Rexall Place expires in 2014?

When Sports Go Viral

It’s been a while since we’ve delved into the world of fantastic sports videos on the internet, but don’t worry – When Sports Go Viral is back!

This time around we’ve got some hilarious stuff from the NBA, a pretty funny blooper from some NCAA track and field action, and an instructional video about how to get fired from your post as the manager of a professional soccer club!

Let’s start out with the NBA, where model Kate Upton has teamed up with the Oklahoma City Thunder for “Take a Supermodel to Work” day.

Moving right along – BYU senior Katy Andrews is a little more well known this week, after a pretty terrific wipeout during the Robison Invitational last Saturday.

It happened during the 3,000 meter steeplechase event – Andrews comes flying towards the “water jump” and doesn’t quite make it!

To her credit, she uploaded the video to YouTube herself, while her school provided another angle . Andrews says she doesn’t remember smacking the barrier and left the race with a cut on her head and a big bruise on her thigh. Ouch!

Finally - this is how you get fired from your post as the manager of a Serie A club:

Unhappy about being subbed off, Fiorentina player Adem Ljajic gave a sarcastic hand clap in his manager’s direction, and Delio Rossi absolutely lost the plot and attacked him.

The team’s president fired Rossi immediately after the game. What a bizarre turn of events!

Crazy times in the CHL

We’ve all seen what a Gongshow the first round of the NHL playoffs has been, but there is some crazy stuff happening in the ranks of the CHL these days as well!

First off, let’s give a shout out to the WHL’s Edmonton Oil Kings. Not only have they won every game they’ve played so far in this year’s playoffs, but they’re also the only unbeaten playoff team left in the entire Canadian Hockey League!

If you think 11-0 is impressive, I’ve got another one for you – the Oil Kings are now riding a 22-game win streak into game four against the Moose Jaw Warriors, with their last loss coming over two months ago. Not bad, eh?

Not to be outdone, the OHL’s East Final has had a couple of noteworthy moments so far as well.

Ottawa 67’s captain Marc Zanetti got the series off to an interesting start when he was suspended indefinitely for a kick to the head of Niagara IceDogs winger Tom Kuhnhackl in the opening game. On Tuesday, the league decided the overage blue liner was done for the playoffs.

On a much lighter note, IceDogs goalie Mark Visentin made headlines in game three when he sniped from behind his own net in a 5-2 win. Not only did he score the empty net goal, but it will also go down as a shorthanded marker, which is even sweeter!

Atta boy!

Goals of the Week!

As we get ready to take in some first round playoff action in the NHL, let’s not forget to look back on the beauty goals that got us to this point!

This week on the GOTW (for the week of March 26) we’ve got a couple of guys getting on the end of beautiful plays by their teammates and three awesome breakaways. If you scroll right to the bottom, you’ll also see one of the strangest goals of the year!

Let’s go!

5. Jakub Voracek

That series between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Pittsburgh Penguins is really going to be something, especially if we get to see the type of games we saw recently between those two clubs. Check out this beauty goal from Jakub Voracek!

4. Mikko Koivu

The Minnesota Wild might not be in the playoffs, but they certainly ended the season on a high note with plays like this overtime goal by Mikko Koivu – what a beauty!

3. Gustav Nyquist

Gustav Nyquist scored his first career NHL goal recently, and it couldn’t have been a more memorable one! Check out the feed from Pavel Datsyuk, right onto the tape of Nyquist!

2. Alex Radulov

He hasn’t been back in the NHL for long, but Nashville Predators forward Alex Radulov is certainly making himself at home – watch him dice through the Blackhawks defence for this unreal snipe!

1. Kyle Turris

Ottawa Senators forward Jason Spezza did all the work on this Kyle Turris goal, and I doubt anyone will remember that it was Turris who ended up getting credit for it. Check out the moves on display from Spezza!

What the Puck?

Thomas Vanek scored a goal recently against the Pittsburgh Penguins that probably goes down as the strangest, yet nicest goal I’ve seen in a while!

Goals of the Week!

If you think I missed an installment of my GOTW segment, you’re absolutely right…but I’m here to make it up to you!

This edition of the Goals of the Week features the top five goals from the week of March 19th – a beauty spin-o-rama, a couple of solid breakaway dekes, some end-to-end action and a poke check gone wrong!

Let’s go!

5. Ben Maxwell

He’s only got one goal this season, but it was a beauty! Check out this spin move by Winnipeg’s Ben Maxwell against the Washington Capitals!

4. PA Parenteau

It’s been a tough season for the Toronto Maple Leafs, especially between the pipes, and it’s got a bit to do with guys like PA Parenteau of the NY Islanders. Check out this beauty breakaway goal!

3. Tomas Plekanec

There’s nothing nicer than a beautifully executed breakaway – just ask Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec, who makes Ilya Bryzgalov look silly on this play!

2. Brad Richards

NY Rangers forward Brad Richards checks in at number two on this list with a solid individual effort against the Red Wings, going coast-to-coast for the game-tying goal.

1. Claude Giroux

Philadelphia’s Claude Giroux has become easily one of my most favorite players in the NHL this season, and it’s got a lot to do with his absolutely filthy mitts. Check out this deke and goal against the Caps!

What the Puck?

Adam Burish of the Dallas Stars recently discovered a new way to drop the gloves!

Last week’s GOTW will be up shortly!

Goals of the Week!

Well folks, another week of NHL has come and gone, which means another week’s worth of potential Goals of the Week candidates!

This week on the GOTW we’ve got some magic from a guy who used to do it all the time, a beauty Avalanche, some sick hands from an Edmonton kid, a “welcome back” dangle and a bit of coast-to-coast action!

Let’s go!

5. Alex Edler

Anytime a guy takes the puck from behind his own net and is able to cash at the other end of the ice, it’s a thing of beauty. Check out this goal by Vancouver’s Alex Edler last week!

4. Matt Hunwick

Colorado’s Matt Hunwick is a guy you might not expect to see too often on this list, but how can you ignore the type of dangles he put on display recently? What a goal!

3. Ryan Shannon

Tampa Bay’s Ryan Shannon gave Marty Turco a bit of a “welcome back” present last week, dangling him right back to Austria with a nifty breakaway move!

2. Tyler Ennis

He doesn’t score often, but when he does, it’s usually the result of a solid play! Check out the hands on Tyler Ennis, who checks in at number two on this week’s list!

1. Alex Ovechkin

The Great 8 is making a late push for the Washington Capitals and just filling the net on a nightly basis recently. That includes this beauty against the Blackhawks where Alex Ovechkin totally undresses Duncan Keith!

What the Puck?

In the game of hockey there are three types of luck – there’s good luck, there’s bad luck, and then there’s this:

What a tough break!

This week on 15MOF: Sidney Crosby makes his long awaited return to action, Taylor Hall gets belted against the Flames and a couple of Oilers should be up for trophies this off season. As well: a handful of early “March Madness” upsets!

In the GABBYs: Teemu Selanne, Steven Stamkos, Ilya Bryzgalov, soccer fights, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees and Adriano. The Punchline this week is the Orlando Predators!

Goals of the Week!

With the playoff races in both conferences of the National Hockey League in full flight, every goal counts…even the greasy ones!

Only the nice ones make it onto the GOTW list though, and even though it’s coming to you a bit later than usual, it’s still got everything you need when it comes to beauty dangles! This week on the list we’ve got a scrapper showing off some hands, a bit of backhand magic, a diving breakaway goal, some inside-out trickery and a dazzling display that ends unselfishly.

Let’s go!

5. Chris Thorburn

It’s happened a few times already this season, but what’s one more time for good measure? Don’t you love when a guy known for knocking heads ends up turning some heads with a nice move on a top end tendy? Check out this goal by Winnipeg’s Chris Thorburn!

4. Chris Stewart

From one Chris to another, Chris Stewart scored a must-see backhander goal last week, driving down the wing and putting an impossible shot into the top section of the net!

3. Bobby Ryan

The Anaheim Ducks sniper struck again last week against the Oilers, sneaking in behind the defence and sending a diving backhander past Nikolai Khabibulin.

2. Torrey Mitchell

With time running down, check out the moves by Torrey Mitchell of the San Jose Sharks, absolutely undressing Dallas defenceman Alex Goligoski for a beauty goal!

1. Henrik Zetterberg

Henrik Zetterberg got the goal, but this play is all Valtteri Filppula. The Detroit forward just slices through the opposition before setting up Zetterberg with an amazing spin-o-rama pass. Pure class!

What the Puck?

This week’s WTP moment comes to us from Milan Michalek and the Ottawa Senators – is scoring a hat trick any less impressive when two-thirds of your goals are scored into an empty net?

15 Minutes of Fame

This week on 15 Minutes of Fame we’re discussing Marty Turco’s return to the NHL, the end of the line for Sean Avery, the latest on Sidney Crosby and a couple of interesting concussion notes from around the league. As well: Peyton Manning is no longer a Colt, so where will he end up?

In the GABBYs: Leo Messi, Hiroshi Hoketsu, David Beckham, Nicklas Grossmann, Fernando Torres and Jose Canseco. The Punchline this week is David Price and David Robertson!

Goals of the Week!

Another week has come and gone, which means another week’s worth of goals to whittle down into another Top 5 list!

In this edition of the GOTW: some beauty sauce, a rarely seen 5-on-1, some nice moves on a partial breakaway, a nifty bit of tic-tac-toe action and some filthy between the legs dangles!

Let’s go!

5. Matt Duchene

Injuries have limited Colorado’s Matt Duchene this season, but before his latest bout with the injury bug he managed to convert on this saucer feed from teammate Paul Stastny for a beauty goal!

4. Bryan Little

The Winnipeg Jets beat the Florida Panthers 7-0 last week, which included something I don’t recall ever seeing in the past – an even-strength 5-on-1 rush! Bryan Little finished off this nice bit of passing to make it a 4-0 game.

3. Evander Kane

If a team scores seven goals in a game, there are bound to be a couple of gems in there – you’ve seen one, now check out this slick move by Winnipeg’s Evander Kane!

2. Zach Parise

New Jersey Devils forward Zach Parise is starting to heat up as the playoffs approach, which is good news if that’s your team! Check out this passing play started by Patrik Elias and finished by Parise. Beauty!

1. Loui Eriksson

Checking in at number one this week is Dallas Stars forward Loui Eriksson, who made Alex Tanguay look silly by putting the puck between his skates and then sniping with a backhand shot for the shorthanded goal!

What the Puck?

This week’s WTP moment comes to us from Montreal, where Erik Cole learned that just because a guy is your teammate, it doesn’t mean he won’t nail you!

That one looked like it hurt!

15 Minutes of Fame

Happy Monday!

This week on 15 Minutes of Fame we look at the reasons behind the Toronto Maple Leafs firing their coach, an idea that would make the final month of the NHL season more interesting for non-playoff teams, the “expanded” MLB playoffs and Ryan Braun’s overturned doping case.

In the GABBYs: Bat boys, the LA Clippers, Brad Keselowski, Danica Patrick, Tiger Woods/Peyton Hillis and the New Orleans Saints. The Punchline this week is USA Yoga!

When Sports Go Viral

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes the internet with some crazy new stuff to flip the script on you!

This week on “When Sports Go Viral,” that is exactly what happens – from paper airplane world records to singing athletes to funny car commercials involving athletes, it’s all here for your perusal. Oh yes, and there’s some Auto-Tune.

Remember the video of Tim Tebow reading Dr. Seuss? Well, you had to know this was coming:

While we’re on the topic of athletes with hidden talents, did you see JaVale McGee flexing his volleyball muscles in a recent NBA game?

Yeah, he got benched for that one. Seems a bit harsh to me! Speaking of harshness, this next video is a pretty good indication that the Minnesota Timberwolves should probably just stick to their day jobs!

You’ve heard of a basketball player dunking over a car…but have you ever heard of a car dunking over a basketball player?

I leave you with this: Former NCAA quarterback Joe Ayoob made headlines recently when he broke the paper airplane world record at an airplane hangar somewhere in the US!

The best part of this video is how hard the “designer” of the plane is celebrating after the record is set!

Have you got a video you’d like to see featured here? Leave me a comment below!

Goals of the Week!

Another week has come and gone in the National Hockey League, which means it’s time for another look at the top goals from around the rinks!

This time on the GOTW, Lightning strikes against the Ducks, a captain comes up big in overtime, a grizzled veteran shows off some silky hands, a Senator undresses a Capital and a Penguin undresses an entire team!

Let’s go!

5. Teddy Purcell

This beauty goal from the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Teddy Purcell (starts at the 1:30 mark) begins with a nifty toe drag and ends with a backhander to the top shelf – what a beauty!

4. Ryan Callahan

It’s always nice when you can depend on your captain to come up big in a clutch situation, and that’s exactly what we saw last week from Ryan Callahan of the NY Rangers! Check out this beauty overtime goal, which just so happens to be his 100th career gino!

3. Ray Whitney

Ray “the ageless wonder” Whitney checks in at number three this week – when a Calgary Flames defenceman blows a tire at his own blue line, Whitney is there to pick up the puck and absolutely embarrass Miikka Kiprusoff with a sweet move!

2. Milan Michalek

Oh, to be Dennis Wideman last Wednesday - the Washington Capitals defenceman was completely undressed by Ottawa Senators forward Milan Michalek on this highlight reel goal! Michalek puts the puck through Wideman’s skates, cuts towards the front of the net and pokes it past Tomas Vokoun...and then he does a funny celebration.

1. Evgeni Malkin

No surprise here folks – Evgeni Malkin is once again number one on my list after a heroic solo effort against the Tampa Bay Lightning last weekend. This guy never ceases to amaze – watch as he literally skates through the entire team and scores one of his three goals on the day!

What the Puck?

There are many ways that one can score a goal in the great game of hockey, but most of them are a lot less painful than the way that Washington’s Mathieu Perreault discovered last week! Check this out:

Ouch!
